Today, I am 25 years old. A quarter of a century. Able to rent a car. But what does that really mean? Functionally, nothing. The difference between 9124 days and 9125 days is hardly notable, in the grand scheme of things. But in the immortal words of Lesley Gore:
I don’t think I’ll be crying today, but I will be doing what I want — writing what I want. Recently, I haven’t been writing any analysis pieces. Not many. Any. Why?
There are a lot of reasons, to be sure.
I haven’t been playing at all competitively recently.
I’ve been putting most of my good ideas up on Lolesports.com, where the audience is bigger.
Riot is working me hard. I’m pretty tired from my work schedule, and from watching OGN/LPL games in addition to my LCS-tied job.
But none of these – or any other excuse I could make – is the reason. There is only one real reason that I have shifted from analysis to fantasy, and posted less consistently. I didn’t want to.
I think that’s an important statement to internalize. If you want to do something, do it. If you don’t, don’t. It’s as simple as that.
And how do I know what I want? By my excuses. Every time I’ve put pen to paper — or fingers to keyboard — to write something I want, I think “but what about that thing that I should write. Five minutes later, I’ve started writing a sore excuse for an article on, I dunno, Maokai top. Five hours later, I’ve decided against writing at all. Five days later, I remind myself that I should be writing that article on Maokai. The cycle continues. So I’m breaking it.
Am I done writing about League of Legends? Of course not. I am done restricting myself to writing about League of Legends. No doubt some readers will be uninterested in my new topics. But if I analyze why I’m writing here, amassing readers comes a distant third to writing what I want and honing my craft. Twenty-five years ago, a new organism was thrust screaming into the world. Fast-forward twenty-five years and it’s a new website being born of that same life form. I hope you’ll stick around to see what it looks like 🙂
